The 2024 action-thriller movie Prey includes mostly up-and-coming actors with a few established names rounding out the cast. The 2024 film follows a Christian missionary couple named Andrew and Sue who get ousted from the Kalahari Desert. When the flee, they get into a dangerous plane crash with other passengers, all of whom must try to survive the environment and lions. Prey has initial mid-to-low scores from viewers on Rotten Tomatoes with a handful of five-star reviews skewing the score high.

While the plot of Prey is admittedly mediocre, one of the movie’s strengths is the cast, who brings the characters to life. The movie includes well-established names in the leads but features mostly new, up-and-coming actors in the supporting roles. Even when everything else falters, the cast provides compelling performances that would garner critical praise if they were in a higher-quality movie.

Ryan Phillippe As Andrew

Actor: Ryan Phillippe was born in New Castle, Delaware. He got both his first role and big break playing Billy Douglas from 1992 to 1993 in the soap opera One Life to Live. His character Billy was US daytime TV’s first openly gay teenager. Since then, he’s taken on leading roles in many renowned movies, including Cruel Intentions and the hit horror movie I Know What You Did Last Summer. The latter film gained him a Blockbuster Entertainment Award nomination for Favorite Supporting Actor - Horror.

Actor: Mena Suvari was born in Newport, Rhode Island and started her career as a model. She got her first acting role as a guest star on the Disney show Boy Meets World. The actor got her big break playing Heather in the 1999 movie American Pie, for which she received a nomination for Favorite Actress - Newcomer at the Blockbuster Entertainment Awards. In 2000, she also received a BAFTA nomination for Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role for her work in American Beauty. The actor has gone on to have an extensive career with over 100 credits to her name.

Emile Hirsch As Grun

Actor: Emile Hirsch was born in Palms, California to visual artist Margaret Esther and producer David M. Hirsch, and he got his first role playing Abel in a 1996 episode of Kindred: The Embraced. The actor got his big break playing Francis Doyle in the 2002 comedy-drama The Dangerous Lives of Altar Boys. Since then, the actor has continued to find success in film and movies, even receiving a Critics' Choice Award in 2009 alongside his castmates for Best Acting Ensemble in one of the best biographical movies, Milk.

Character: Throughout Prey, Emile Hirsch plays Grun, a smuggler who pilots the airplane taking Andrew and Sue out of the Kalahari Desert. He has no regard for the group of plane crash survivors, only using them for his own plans.

Dylan Flashner As Tyler: In Prey, Flashner plays a wealthy passenger named Tyler who is aboard Grun’s dangerous flight. Originally from Boston, the actor started acting in 2020 when he got his first role as Dylan Crest in the drama That One Time. Flashner got his big break a year later when playing Detective Childs in the action-thriller movie Vanquish. He’s best known for acting in The Comeback Trail, The Card Counter, and Bandit.

Tristan Thompson as Max: Throughout Prey, Thompson plays Max, a man on the plane who goes with the group to look for rescue. Born in Beaumont, Texas, the actor got his first onscreen acting role as Bartender in the 2022 thriller movie Collide. A year later, he acted in the movie Deltopia alongside his Prey co-stars Dylan Flashner and Michaela Sasner. The actor had only a handful of roles prior to getting cast as Max in Prey. The action-thriller is the star’s biggest role as of its release.

Jeremy Tardy as Thabo: Tardy plays Thabo, Tyler’s guide through the desert, in Prey. The actor is from Milwaukee, Wisconsin and got his first onscreen acting role in the 2008 fantasy short film The Waiting Room. He got his big break playing Kip in the 2016 biographical comedy War Dogs. Tardy is best known for playing Rashid Bakr in the cast of Dear White People, Andrew in Ballers, Maurice in Voodoo Macbeth, and Mekhi Davis in 68 Whiskey. He also voices the titular main character in the 2023 podcast Othello.

Michaela Sasner As Chrissy: Sasner plays a passenger of the flight named Chrissy who dies in Prey. The actor is based out of Los Angeles and got her first role playing Aubrey in the 2020 dramedy movie Natural Disasters. She got her big break in 2022 playing Ruth in Mending the Line. In addition to this film, Sasner is best known for playing Fast Talking Student in The Tutor and Cleo in Deltopia.

Mohamed Hakeemshady As Scar: In Prey, Hakeemshady plays a character named Scar. The actor was born in Mogadishu, Somalia, and got his first onscreen role as Prince Hakeem in the 2014 movie Webgirl. The up-and-coming actor is best known for playing Salim Hassan in the short film The Norwalk Witness, which he also produced. Prey is his biggest role as of the movie’s release. Hakeemshady has also worked as crew on big-name projects like The Expendables 3, Avengers: Age of Ultron, and Castle Rock.
